NRLCA URGES HOUSE MEMBERS TO VOTE ‘NO’ ON H.R. 3630

February 17, 2012No Comments

WASHINGTON, DC –

On behalf of the 123,000 bargaining unit members represented by the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, we strongly urge Members of the House of Representatives to vote against H.R. 3630, a bill that would increase retirement contributions for future federal and postal employees.

While the NRLCA recognizes the need to extend the payroll tax and unemployment insurance for millions of Americans, it should not be done on the backs of federal and postal employees. Recruiting and retaining a highly skilled workforce should be a priority of civil service. Federal employees have already undergone a two-year pay freeze to help reduce the federal deficit and should not be asked to take additional cuts.

Implementing a provision that would increase pension contributions by 2.3% to pay for a short term government fix is unacceptable. Singling out federal employees by burdening with them with pay freezes and an increase in pension contributions is unfair and undercuts the sacrifice many workers have already made by serving their country.

For these reasons, we urge all Members of the House of Representatives to oppose passage of H.R. 3630.
