FIVE DAYS LEFT TO SAVE SIX-DAY DELIVERY

January 25, 2012No Comments

A postal bill eliminating Saturday mail delivery, altering collective bargaining and mutating the Postal Service as we know it is scheduled for a vote in the Senate next Tuesday, 31 January 2012.

If the 21st Century Postal Service Act of 2011 (S.1789) remains unchanged, it would radically alter our livelihoods as rural letter carriers. Contact your senators now to keep this bill from moving forward without much-needed amendments.

S.1789 moves to strike Saturday mail delivery if the USPS cannot turn a profit after two years. It also requires a “neutral” arbitrator to consider the Postal Service’s financial condition during collective bargaining; this provision appears to give management a leg up before negotiations even begin.

Nevertheless, we are working closely with senators to make this bill more favorable. Please monitor your e-mail inboxes frequently over the next five days for updates on this quickly-developing situation.

The NRLCA recognizes legislative action is required to keep the Postal Service financially solvent, but in its current form, S.1789 would harm our membership greatly. Together, we can make our voice heard on Capitol Hill.

Stay active,
